Kevin Harman - Artist statement

My work deals with the raw strength of objects. The objects I use seem to be extensions of power, instruments that cause impact. I aim to root out the hidden beauty within these items and change how we see them in everyday life. I do this by collecting and using common objects that have a gritty, possibly nostalgic feel; I find doing this helps to converse with viewers and allows an access point to my work.

My sculptures are made through a compulsive reaction to the familiar. I like to get objects stripped back to their essence, and then use them in an alternative way, but always in keeping with their primary function. When I put the subjects together, it's important that they flow as one piece of work and it's important that each object doesn't lose its functionality as an individual entity.

By its nature, my practice just now as a maturing artist involves creating temporary sculptures with hints of performance and important elements of recycling in our current climate.
